Before there was the Internet - before there was television - before there was film, and radio, and the printed word - before there was theater and cave paintings, there was the spoken word. Storytelling has been with us since the days of the caveman. Communities sat around campfires while village elders related tales and myths in word, song and dance. The art of live storytelling has always been with us and has gained popularity in the past few years. Podcasts like "The Moth" "Vinyl Café" and "Porchlight Storytelling Series" are quite popular these days. Live storytelling events take place in many communities each weekend. One of my personal favorite storytelling events is "Mortified Nation" where adults share stories from their personal journals about their adolescent years.
Surprisingly Good Productions is dedicated to helping people share true stories from their lives, and it is in this spirit that we are proud to announce Ventura County's first live storytelling event, "Full Disclosure." Produced in cooperation with the Santa Paula Theater Center, our events take place the first Sunday evening of every other month.
Our maiden event premiered on May 7. Appropriately, the theme of the evening was "Beginnings." The evening featured six local storytellers, each sharing a personal tale about a major transition that took place in his or her own life. One shared a story about finding the courage to join a sailing crew for the adventure of a lifetime. Another talked about the two years she and he
r husband lived in Greece. Another revealed a family secret that was only recently revealed to her. Some of the participants were professional storytellers. Others never stepped onto a stage before. In addition to the stories, the Santa Paula Ukulele Club provide live music in between each tale. The house was completely sold out, something we were not anticipating. Happily, we were able to accommodate the overflow crowd.
At our events, the Surprisingly Good Production team will be filming each story and presenting some of our favorites on our new YouTube Channel We will be adding videos after each event, so make sure to subscribe so you don't miss out.
If you're interested in attending one of our live performances, or perhaps participating as one of our storytellers (no experience necessary), visit The Santa Paula Theater Center website for more information.
